The town of Vigo is a busy commercial and fishing port located in the north-western part of Spain close to the Portuguese border. The surrounding mountainous region has a large expanse of greenery and provided a welcome and interesting sight when entering the port from the Atlantic.
In the short time available to us after docking, we opted to spend the time exploring El Castro citadel situated at the top of Monte de Castro. It was a short flat walk from the harbour to the nearby shops, but then changed to a steep climb through the town and nice wooded park leading up the peak. After stopping off at a bar for much needed refreshment and taking in the scenery, we moved on to the peak and were rewarded with some excellent views of the surrounding region.
With the day now hotting up, we took a different route offering a little more shade through the park and into the town where we stopped off at another bar. After sampling more of the local brew and watching the world go by for some time, we returned to the Caronia for afternoon tea!
In fine tradition, the band played out on the veranda during the exit from Vigo port, which took us past the by now busy beach area to the south, before entering the ocean for our next port of call, Madeira.
