One of the delights in cruising is the ability to eat a wide range of food throughout the day. Hence, I apologise in advance if the photos or the text on this page offends those of you who like your food, but put on weight easily.

Steven and LynnOn the day following our departure from Lisbon and two days sailing time away from our destination port of Southampton, Caronia held its last formal event. At lunchtime we were treated to a first class buffet, which the chef and his staff had worked hard through the previous night and following morning to put on a wonderful feast. The quality and choice was excellent, as well as being imaginatively presented.

Whilst the pictures do not do justice to the sights witnessed by the passengers parading past the tables ahead of the meal, I for one made sure I gave it due justice when working my way though the menu! For those who know me well, I have a tendency to enjoy my puddings, two preferably, three if Lynn is not looking!

Now I wouldn't want it said that I was a glutton. But since I am fortunate enough to have a healthy (well if you discount the meat, butter and other things which I am not supposed to have!) appetite and have been lucky to retain a fairly constant weight over the last thirty years - slight belly ripple excepted, then I think I am aright to still pursue my food and drinking pleasures......

If you are thinking about cruising for the first time, I guess you should approach the meal times with moderation, maintain some exercise to work off the excess and have enjoy the food which someone else has cooked. In my opinion, I found the standards of cuisine to be superior to many so called quality restaurants which I have been to over the years, business or pleasure.

If you are not too sure what to expect in the way of meal times then a typical day would go something like this:

06:30 - 07:30  Continental breakfast for the early riser
07:30 - 10:00  Breakfast buffet (On the last cruise, I did nip in some days for a pre-breakfast just to keep me going till Lynn got up!)
08:00 - 09:30  Breakfast in main dining room
11:00 - 11:30  Hot Bouillon (quick midmorning snack)
12:30 - 14:00  Lunch (I mean a proper one, no half measures)
16:00 - 16:45  Afternoon Tea (sandwiches, cakes, fruit etc.)
19:00 - 21:00  Dinner (five course - or was it six!)
11:00 - 00:00  Night snack (for the party revellers)

and finally!

Insomniacs were well catered for with free cabin service offering a good range of snacks to keep you topped up until the skies light up again the following morning and the breakfast bar opens again to start the next days cycle!!

Without wishing to sound like an advert on behalf of Cunard, I have to say that we enjoyed ourselves and full marks to the chef, his staff and of course the hard working waiters that had to keep the likes of me fed and watered....
