The second port of call was the Italian city of Trieste to the north-east of the country. For a Monday it was quiet due to the city enjoying a public holiday, so most of the shops were closed! It is close to the border with Slovenia and was formally a major port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
This was our second visit to the city, the last in 1969. Although we saw a number of historic buildings on our travels, the city could best be described as having a faded charm. Later that day, Emerald sailed to it's next port of call, Venice.
